Now What?

Strip #13 (continued from Aug 24th)

Unlike a lot of authors I read about online, I don't find writing to be a pleasant experience.  Don't get me wrong, I obviously derive something positive from it, or I wouldn't be doing it.  But by and large, writing for me is fraught with worry, and if there was one thing I could ask for to make things easier, it would be a positive version of me to help me with my decision making.  That is what this comic strip is about.

  1. I have a question... Why did you start writing in the first place? What was it that made you put the pen to the paper, so to speak. (I actually start out with the pen and paper then move to the computer then back again and drive myself crazy!)And what is it about writing that you don't like? Why does it cause you worry? Sorry guess that was three questions..

  2. Hi kkrafts. In a previous life, before my second kid was born, I was an oil painter who blogged. I enjoyed the whole blog experience; writing in bite sized pieces and getting immediate feedback was fun. I realized, however, that I had some pretty cool ideas shoved away in my head, but to properly explore them, I would have to commit to writing something more in depth.

    Like a novel.

So that is what I did. I was in my thirties by this point, and not having studied English or writing in University or anything, it felt positively overwhelming. And the thing is, I don't consider myself particularly gifted when it comes to writing. But at the same time, I knew what I wanted. So I persevered, and after a couple of years I found myself with a 200 000 word manuscript. (hand written) It was pretty rough, but eventually decided if I'd spent that much time on it, I might as well see it through to the end.

I guess the big thing is, I don't see myself as an author type. I have a short attention span and have to fight just to complete a single paragraph. The act of sitting down and putting things down on paper is painful, but the idea of having all these stories die with me is even worse.

So there you have it: I'm an A.D.D type who, for what ever reason, has made it his mission to write novels conforming to a standard that might or might not be beyond his capabilities.

    I hope I didn't bore you. :P
